What is DMX?
DMX, or Digital Multiplex, is a protocol (or language, if you will) for controlling stage lighting and effects. It was born in the 1980s when the entertainment industry needed a standard way to connect and control their ever-growing lighting setups. At its heart, DMX enables a single controller – be it a fancy console or a computer program – to dictate exactly how individual lights or fixtures should behave.
How Does It Work?
Every light or fixture in a DMX setup gets a unique address, similar to how each house in a street has its own number. This allows the controller to send specific instructions to individual lights. Think of it like a conductor of an orchestra, guiding each instrument to play its part.
Instructions are transmitted in binary form (the language of 1s and 0s) in what we call “channels.” Each DMX “universe” supports up to 512 channels. This means that depending on the equipment, one universe might control 512 individual lights or, more commonly, a smaller number of lights with multiple features (e.g., brightness, color, pan, tilt).
